Emerson THR Series

The Emerson THR is the top standard frame of the T-Series large-capacity, balanced-port, take-apart expansion valve family, spanning nominally 55 to 85 tons R-22 by cage selection, with complete-valve configurations rated to 100 tons (THR 100HC / THR 100HW100). Above it sits only the TMR variant frame (to 100 tons R-22/R-407C). This is the valve for the largest direct-expansion circuits where a fixed, non-serviceable valve would be a liability.

The T-Series proposition scales with tonnage: at 75–100 tons, cutting out and re-brazing a failed valve means crane time, refrigerant recovery, and plant downtime. The THR's take-apart construction converts that into a bolt-off component swap — cage kit, flange, or power assembly — with the body staying in the line. Balanced-port construction and standard external equalization hold superheat stable across the wide pressure differentials these systems see.

Cage kits available — the cage sets the capacity: X-9144-B10B — 55 tons R-22 · X-9144-B11B — 75 tons R-22 (70 tons on R-407C) · X-9144-B13B — 85 tons R-22. The same X-9144 cages serve the TMR frame.

Cages are not interchangeable between frames. THR and TMR use X-9144; TIR uses X-9166; TER uses X-9117. A 55-ton THR cage and a 55-ton TIR cage are different parts despite the identical tonnage — read the frame letters off the body, or send us a nameplate photo and we will identify it.

Reading the model code: T = take-apart, HR = the top standard large-capacity frame, then nominal tons on R-22, then the refrigerant letter (H = R-22, M = R-134a, N = R-407C, S = R-404A, P = R-507) and the charge code (C medium temp, W MOP/pressure-limiting, Z low temp, AA wide range). All large-capacity R-frames ship externally equalized with external superheat adjustment.

Specify a THR when a 55 to 100 ton DX circuit — large screw or centrifugal chiller, blast freezer bank, process cooling skid — needs an expansion valve that can be serviced without breaking into the pipework. If the plant duty has changed rather than the valve failing, quote a cage kit first: it is a fraction of the cost of a complete valve.
