Emerson TIR Series

The Emerson TIR is the mid frame of the T-Series large-capacity, balanced-port, take-apart expansion valve family — the step between the TER (22–45 tons R-22) and the THR (55–85 tons). The TIR cage kit delivers a nominal 55 tons on R-22 (35 tons R-12, 45 tons R-134a, 37 tons R-404A/R-507), sharing the same take-apart architecture: interchangeable cage, body flange, and power assembly, each field-replaceable without removing the valve body from the line.

Like all R-frame T-Series valves, the TIR is balanced-port and externally equalized as standard, with external superheat adjustment and bi-directional capability. For plants running mixed T-Series frames, power assemblies (XC-726 series) are shared across TER/TIR/THR/TMR — one spare head covers the whole large-capacity installed base.

Cage kit — there is only one: X-9166-B10B (item 070738), the single 55-ton R-22 cage for the TIR frame. Unlike the TER, the TIR is not re-ranged by cage selection; if you need a different capacity you need a different frame.

The 55-ton TIR cage and the 55-ton THR cage are different parts. TIR uses the X-9166 prefix, THR and TMR use X-9144, TER uses X-9117 — same nominal tonnage, non-interchangeable hardware. Read the frame letters off the valve body before ordering a cage, or send us a photo of the nameplate and we will identify it.

Specify a TIR when a single circuit around 50–55 tons on R-22 or R-407C needs a serviceable expansion valve — screw chillers, large ammonia-adjacent halocarbon plant, and cold-store packs where cutting a welded valve out of the line is not an option.
