Emerson TER Series

The Emerson TER is the entry frame of the T-Series large-capacity, balanced-port, take-apart thermostatic expansion valves — covering nominally 22 to 45 tons on R-22 (13–25 tons R-12; 14–27 tons R-404A/R-507). The T-Series take-apart architecture is the defining feature: the valve is assembled from three interchangeable, field-replaceable components — cage kit, body flange, and power assembly — so a failed valve is serviced in-line by swapping the affected component rather than cutting the whole valve out.

Balanced-port construction keeps superheat control stable across wide operating pressure ranges, and all large-capacity R-frames (TER, TIR, THR, TMR) are inherently externally equalized. External superheat adjustment and bi-directional capability round out a platform built for serviceability on big systems.

Cage kits available — the cage sets the capacity, so this is usually the part you actually need:

X-9117-B6B — 22 tons R-22 · X-9117-B7B — 26 tons · X-9117-B8B — 35 tons · X-9117-B9B — 45 tons. On R-404A/R-507 the same four cages give roughly 14, 16, 21 and 27 tons; on R-134a roughly 16, 19, 25 and 31 tons; R-407C matches the R-22 figures.

The cage prefix is body-specific and cages do not interchange between frames. TER uses X-9117, TIR uses X-9166, THR and TMR use X-9144. A "T-Series cage kit" enquiry that does not name the frame cannot be quoted — send the frame and the tonnage.

Reading the model code: T = take-apart with adjustable superheat, ER = the large-capacity balanced-port entry frame, then the nominal tons on R-22, then the refrigerant letter (H = R-22, M = R-134a, N = R-407C, S = R-404A, P = R-507, F = R-12, R = R-502) and the charge code (C medium temp, CA heat pump, W MOP/pressure-limiting, Z low temp, AA wide range). Current ALCO A1/A2L production writes the body as TERE with newer charge codes — tell us whether you are matching legacy stock or specifying new.

Specify a TER when a 20 to 45 ton R-22 or R-407C plant needs its expansion valve replaced or re-ranged — and remember that if the duty has changed rather than the valve failing, a cage kit is far cheaper than a whole valve.
