Mafron R-134a

Mafron R-134a is a single-component HFC refrigerant (1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane) — the global workhorse for medium- and high-temperature cooling and the proven replacement for R-12. Colourless, non-flammable, and low in toxicity, it carries ASHRAE safety classification A1 (lowest toxicity, no flame propagation) with zero ozone depletion potential.

The Mafron® brand belongs to Navin Fluorine International Ltd. (NFIL), the company that introduced refrigerant manufacturing to India in 1967 at Surat, Gujarat. NFIL is backward-integrated into hydrofluoric and sulfuric acid — the critical precursors — giving Mafron gases consistent, domestically manufactured quality with OEM approvals. For buyers burned by grey-market refrigerant of uncertain origin, that pedigree is the point: every Mafron cylinder supplied by Refrigeration Controls is genuine, traceable, and meets the guaranteed specification below.

Also asked for as: R134a gas, R-134 gas, HFC-134a, tetrafluoroethane, and "R-12 replacement gas". Because it is a pure fluid rather than a blend, there is no glide and no fractionation — which makes it the most forgiving refrigerant on this list to work with.

Where it is used: water-cooled and air-cooled centrifugal and screw chillers, medium-temperature cold rooms and display cabinets, water coolers and bottle coolers, dairy and beverage chilling, pharmaceutical and process cooling, dehumidifiers and heat pumps, and automotive and transport air conditioning — plus the remaining R-12 plant that has been converted across.

Match the oil to the system, not the gas. New and converted R-134a equipment runs on POE; old R-12 machinery ran on mineral oil, and a conversion needs a documented oil changeout plus a fresh filter drier — not a top-up. In automotive air conditioning the lubricant is PAG, which is a different family again. Never mix the three.

One caution on "R-134a" sold for cars: automotive service cans often contain dye, sealant or leak-stop additives. Those additives have no place in a chiller or a cold room — they foul expansion valves and driers. For plant work, order refrigerant-grade gas in cylinders, which is what we supply.
