Mafron R-404A

Mafron R-404A is the HFC blend of R-125 (44%), R-143a (52%), and R-134a (4%) that became the global workhorse of low- and medium-temperature commercial refrigeration — supermarket racks, cold storage, freezer rooms, ice machines, and refrigerated transport. Near-azeotropic behaviour (glide ~0.7 K) keeps service practice straightforward, and Class A1 classification keeps it non-flammable and low-toxicity across the cold chain.

Per NFIL's own positioning, R-404A serves supermarkets, refrigerated vans, cold storages, and commercial refrigeration — exactly Refrigeration Controls' core customer base. The honest caveat: at GWP 3922 it is the highest-GWP mainstream refrigerant, first in line under HFC phase-down economics. We supply genuine gas for the installed base while advising operators on leak-tightness (the cheapest compliance strategy) and transition planning.

Also asked for as: R404A gas, R404 gas, HFC-404A, and "freezer gas" — the shorthand most cold-storage buyers use. It is frequently specified alongside or in place of R-507; the two are close in duty but not the same fluid, so order the one the equipment plate names.

Where it is used: blast freezers and freezer rooms, cold storage and ripening chambers, supermarket and retail display packs, ice plants and ice machines, refrigerated transport and reefer bodies, dairy and food-processing plant — typically at evaporating temperatures from about −45 °C to −15 °C.

Service points. Charge as liquid. The oil is POE — mineral oil will not return through a low-temperature evaporator, so never top up an R-404A machine with mineral oil, and fit a fresh filter drier whenever the system is opened. Because the blend has a small glide, superheat and subcooling should be calculated from the dew and bubble points, not from a single saturation figure.

On the phase-down, plainly: R-404A is not banned in India today and the installed base is large, but its GWP makes it the first target of every future restriction and the most expensive charge to lose through a leak. If you run R-404A plant, the two things worth doing now are tightening leak detection and planning replacement at end of equipment life — not panic-converting a working system.
