Mafron R-410A

Mafron R-410A is the 50/50 near-azeotropic blend of R-32 and R-125 that became the world standard for modern residential and light-commercial air conditioning. With negligible temperature glide (<0.2 K) it behaves like a single-component fluid in service, and its high volumetric capacity enabled the compact, efficient AC equipment now installed across India in vast numbers — all of which needs genuine service gas.

The critical service fact: R-410A operates at roughly 50–60% higher pressures than R-22. It is exclusively for equipment designed for it — never a retrofit gas for R-22 systems — and demands R-410A-rated gauges, hoses, and recovery equipment. POE lubricant only.

Also asked for as: R410A gas, R410 gas, HFC-410A, "pink cylinder" gas (the industry colour code), and by the trade names used by other manufacturers — all the same AHRI 700 fluid.

Where it is used: split, cassette, ducted and multi-split air conditioners; VRF and VRV systems; heat pumps; packaged rooftop units; and light-commercial chillers built in the R-410A generation — a very large share of everything installed in Indian commercial buildings over the past fifteen years.

Charge it as liquid, and only into R-410A equipment. Although the glide is negligible, the blend is still charged liquid-phase as standard practice. Never put R-410A into a system designed for R-22 or R-407C: the design pressures are not there and the failure is not gradual. Use gauges and hoses rated for R-410A, and remember the oil is POE — handle it as moisture-sensitive and fit a fresh drier whenever the system is opened.

A note on where the market is going: new equipment is increasingly built for R-32 rather than R-410A, but the installed R-410A base is enormous and will need service gas for many years. Buying genuine, certificate-backed cylinders for that base is straightforwardly cheaper than replacing compressors damaged by contaminated gas.
